“Are You That Somebody” BANKS Cover

BANKS stopped by the BBC radio 1 Live Lounge to perform an acoustic cover of Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody” and an acoustic version of her latest single “Brains.”

Whether it’s produced with R&B beats or stripped down to only vocals and a guitar, BANKS’s performance is still soulful and amazing.

London Grammar Covers “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak

London Grammar covered “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak.

London Grammar keeps the clean open guitar riff but replaces Chris Isaak’s rockabilly vocals with her Marina and the Diamonds style voice. Her cover keeps the song in a very clean and trip-hop-influenced sound.

It’s really hard to not like any cover of “Wicked Game” though. Giant Drag’s overdrive-filled cover has been a favorite of mine for years.

“Thinking About You” cover by Typhoon (orig. Frank Ocean)

Self-proclaimed “post-pop” Portlandians Typhoon released a cover of R&B star Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You.”

While Frank Ocean’s original is synth-filled and bass-driven, Typhoon takes their guitars, drums, string ensemble, female vocal harmonies and the occasion synth and trashcan-bang combo to give their cover an indie folk / indie rock feel.

[COVER:] “The Promse” by When in Rome – Covered by Late Night Alumni

I once told my mom that I love “The Promise” by When in Rome. She then told me that she always hated that song because it’s so corny and also that it was my dad’s “song” with his ex-girlfriend before he met my mom in the 80s.

So that adds to why I really like the Late Night Alumni cover of “The Promise” – it’s a cover that takes a cheesily romantic 80s new wave ballad and breathes new house beats into it along with sultry female vocals.
