Depeche Mode in Dior’s “Secret Garden III” Ad

Dior and Depeche Mode (obviously not an indie/up-and-coming band) recently launched their “Secret Garden III – Versailles” video campaign.

Relatively recently, Versailles has been the backdrop of more playfully soundtracked visuals (e.g. Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris).

The use of “Strangelove” by Depeche Mode in the Dior ad is in tune with the elegance of Versailles while giving it a dark feel. In addition, the use of an ’80s classic track melds perfectly with the 80s montage music video feel of the “film” and the cuts of the dresses.

[Premiere]: “LTD LTD” by DOLLS

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, DOLLS has released her music video for “LTD LTD.”

The video has a minimalist monochromatic color scheme contrasted by the kaleidoscope effect – similar to that of the “Synthetica” music video by Metric but with an eerie feel. At times resembling a Rorschach test, the minimalist style leads viewers and listeners completely to their own interpretations – imagining and building even more to the song itself.

Much like the video, “LTD LTD” begins with a minimalist beat and Nikki Awesome’s Kylie Minogue-style electropop vocals then builds from there to a sultry but playful track.

The video perfectly captures the mystery and suspense of romance – with the dark setting and shadow-like visuals – depicting the confusing but exhilarating emotions of love.

Sidenote: If you’ve got someone who makes your heart beat like “LTD LTD,” send that person one of DOLLS’s Valentine’s Day cards.

Chela – BoxSpeaker’s Latest Electro Crush

All aboard the SS BoxSpeaker – headed straight to Melbourne with sights set on the latest BoxSpeaker crush Chela.

Featured as vocals in Goldroom’s track “Fifteen” last year.

Followed by a gigs as vocals on Viceroy’s “Dream of Bombay.”

Then having her single “Full Moon” remixed by Sterling Silver.

Just last week, the Gold Fields remix of her song “Romanticise” was featured by Kitsune Maison – one of the best French record label/tastemaker combos.

Chela is really making a name for herself, especially as the self-proclaimed “new oriental disco heathen goddess on the block.”

The Dreamiest of Dream Pop: Say Lou Lou

Say Lou Lou (formerly Saint Lou Lou) refer to themselves as “DREAM WAVE LOVE”.

This Swedish-Australian duo are the epitome of dream pop: The heavy distorted beats engulf you while their soft, soothing voices lure you further in.

Note: It can’t be ignored that the members of Say Lou Lou are also both extremely hot – I mean they do come from two countries with the sexiest populations…

“Feel” by Dead Times for Stella McCartney Autumn-Winter 2013-2014

Dead Times is a Los Angeles-based electro, “alternative R&B” group. However, I discovered them while I was in Bristol because they were connected to a Valentina track via SoundCloud.

To add even more international connections, their track “Feel” was featured in the Vogue Paris video of Stella McCartney’s 2013-2014 autumn-winter collection.

I got chills and literally was at my desk with my mouth hanging open. This video and also the Free People ad featuring Freja Beha and a depressing Mal Blum song are two examples of the amazing intersection of music and fashion. This and all the fun I had putting together a playlist for Work It, Berk seriously made me lock down my decision to finally pursue DJing fashion shows.

EVERYTHING CONVERGES:

“Apparition” by Frank + Derol

As all 4 of you know, I’ve really been into ghost songs lately.

Here’s another ghost-related song called “Apparition” by Frank + Derol.

Frank + Derol are a semi-electro / dreampop / garage rock sounding Los Angeles duo – Codi Caraco and the as of yet lesser-known Cyrus daughter Brandi Cyrus.

They’re opening with Kitten at tonight’s Sir Sly show at the Casbah in San Diego!
