Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High)” video pretty much depicts the depressing side of The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”.
Whereas The Prodigy’s main character doesn’t give a fuck, Tove Lo’s follows the post-breakup carpe diem and the accidental moments of feeling your actual emotions.
“She Exists in My Mind” by Michna is on repeat.
What’s essentially an instrumental track is so captivating from the beginning with its six seconds of water flows to the first synth chords to the airy vocals to the warbles to the drum beats.
Although Michna is from Brooklyn, “She Exists in My Mind” feels like driving on the 405 in LA during a crisp clear night.
#TBT to both the original “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak and also to Breakdown Valentine’s cover released last month.
Breakdown Valentine took an already heartbreaking song and gave it an eerie twist using the dark wave synths and Olivia Barchard’s longing vocals.
Redditor dizzykiwi3 discovered that Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” fits almost beat-to-beat with “Lungs” by CHVRCHES.
Although, this isn’t the first time someone thought that a Taylor Swift / CHVRCHES breakup would make an amazing mashup.

“Empty Bed” by Gemini Club plays out like the electro response to Death Cab for Cutie’s “Your New Twin-Sized Bed.”
“Empty Bed” captures all the post-breakup nostalgia and all the stages after denial – having your feelings and even your routines and body still trapped in “the life that I knew.”
Stax Osset is churning out more collaborations – this time providing vocals on “Milligrams” by Allday.
With more projects like “Milligrams” and “Missin’ U” with KOWL, Stax Osset is setting herself up as the next GRIMES – electropop with some rap influences.
Focusing away from BoxSpeaker favorite Stax Osset, rapper Allday brings new influences to rap in addition to his Australian accent. A little bit of hip-hop mixed with electro beats, occasional heavy guitar riffs, and a Drake-esque cadence, Allday brings together different pieces of genres to produce what he calls “soft grunge rap love.”
Vérité sounds like BANKS but an octave higher and with guitar riffs in place of some electro beats. Sultry and scratchy.
Also – she alludes to Explosions in the Sky. Who can hate that?
BoxSpeaker favorite CHVRCHES released their latest video for “Under the Tide” – a Japanese anime / TRON mashup style video directed by Sing J. Lee.
A mix of the usual geometric effects, Leiji Matsumoto-esque emotion, and 1970s mecha/space anime, the video blends well with “Under the Tide’s” static backbeat and 80s exploration-cosmic fast tempo riff.
Ghost Loft just released their latest track “Be Easy” – continuing the PBR&B sound they developed since “Seconds” but also deviating from the slight dreampop sound they had in “So High.”
Also notable is a underlying racing heartbeat tempo similar to Chromatics’ cover of “Running Up That Hill.”
Hobart Australia’s KOWL teamed up with Stax Osset to create “I Be Missin’ U” – a dancey electropop song with Prince-inspired guitar riffs.
KOWL’s upbeat “beach house house” instrumentals counter the breakup lyrics Stax Osset sings reminiscing on a two-year relationship that led to feeling used but still missing the feelings of infatuation during those Summers and Winters.
The realization that Stax Osset does not even describe the situation with an overt sadness or anger toward being left adds to the complexity of these situations. Yeah, someone did something shitty and stole your heart away then left, but sometimes you can’t help but remember that before that it was beautiful and warm.
Or maybe it’s a delayed Stockholm Syndrome response.
